The 25th of March marked the 78th Annual House Choral Festival. It was a sensational night filled with great performances ranging from acting, to dancing to singing. Many year 11 girls were involved in the production and one of them was 11J’s Chari who was the Nereid’s Madrigals leader. Below is a short interview with Chari, and a video of Nereid's Madrigal performance.
- What made you want to become the Nereid’s Madrigals leader?
I was asked at the end of last year to be Madrigals Conductor for Nereids and I definitely could not pass up that chance. I’ve been in many choirs but the chance to conduct a choir is quite amazing and it was a huge honour. Obviously I have a huge passion for music and being able to make music with the amazing girls I had was a great experience.
- How did you feel when auditioning people?
For auditions, it was a little tedious. Luckily, I had Faith Bui (11I) to help me out. It was really hard for me to audition because it obviously meant that some people wouldn’t make it into the choir which is where Faith helped me.
- Were rehearsals intense? Was it hard to get everyone together?
It was a huge challenge getting everyone together. About half the girls in the choir were part of chorals and about a quarter of them were with captaincy roles which took priority to rehearsals. In fact, the one time we had everyone rehearsing/performing was on the night of the actual performance!
- Are you happy with your choir’s efforts?
I could not be happier with girls. It was really in the last week that rehearsals were intense and although we moved through our set song quickly, our chosen song was quite difficult. It took time outside rehearsals for the girls to learn their parts which I really appreciate.
- How were you feeling just before going on stage? Any problems on the day?
Just before going on stage, I think everyone was a little nervous, some more than others but the more experienced girls were able to help out and I think everything ran smoothly.
- How was Chorals? What was your favourite part of Chorals?
My favourite part of chorals would probably have to have been conducting these girls. Most of them I’d never really talked to before but we’ve gotten closer and honestly, it’s an amazing feeling that girls who’ve never met each other before can combine their voices to make something so amazing.
- Are you planning on participating in House Chorals next year?
I’ll definitely be participating in Madrigals next year!
- Any shoutouts to Nereids and anybody else you participated?
Shout out to:
Eadie Pockock: for helping me out with conducting’
Jeannie Cheong: for helping the girls out during rehearsals
Evangeline Yong: for being just amazing on the night despite her feeling very sick
Michelle Gully: for learning her part first and super quickly out all of the choir
It was great to have the year 12’s around despite them being busy with their subjects. I’m confident that it’s not just me who feels this way, but House Concerts seem like a really significant event that everyone should participate in because, as cheesy as it may sound, people put a lot of effort into it, it brings people together and the end product is always phenomenal.
Congratulations to Nereids for yet another outstanding achievement.
