Tertiary Information Session (TIS) Notes from 15/06/16

Tertiary Information Session (TIS) Event – 15/06/2016
RMIT University, 1:45pm – 3:00pm, Building 80, Level 7

First 30 minutes – walk through different university stalls and pick up information packs with information about their courses.
Second half of the session (RMIT lecture theatre)

-          You’ll need to do some research
o   Go to open days (come on campus and speak with teachers and people studying courses, as well as see if you feel comfortable in the learning and environmental space)

-          Time to make a decision
o   Different types of qualifications
§  University
·         Bachelor degree qualification (usually 3 year – 5 year)
·         Independent style learning
·         Lecture style – take own notes
·         Tutorials (15-20 people)
·         Commonwealth supported place (defer payment and payback later once earning over certain amount of money). Ask some of your teachers about how this works!

§  TAFE
·         Certificate 1-4
·         Advanced diploma’s
·         Shorter than uni degress – usually 6 months to 2 years
·         Preparing you to go straight to the workforce
·         Check with institutions for costs of courses

§  Independent Tertiary Colleges
·         E.g. Photography studies college
·         E.g. Psychology college
·         Specialised content that you are learning
·         Fee paying programs – from around $5000

-          Pathways
o   Not always straightforward – can move or change course within the same institution or across institutions
o   Eligible to receive credit for previous study done in a previous course (therefore shorter time to complete the second degree)

-          Applying through VTAC
o   Collects all the applications info on behalf of the institutions
o   They will let you know if you’ve been offered a place from an institution
o   Jump online during Aug and Sep to apply (late fees can apply if not done in this time)
§  Create VTAC user account
§  Login
§  List all courses you want to apply for
§  Opens Aug 1 and closes on Sep 29 (late fees apply after this)
o   Prerequisites and selection requirements
§  Make sure you have pre-req subjects (no matter what ATAR won’t be selected)
§  Particular study score (e.g. 25 or 35) – this is the raw score
§  Different selection requirement (e.g. folio, interview, etc.)
·         Apply through VTAC for these – on student to know these details
§  Different universities doing the same course could have different entry requirements

-          Course Codes
o   10 digit code
o   Ending in a ‘1’ – university course – HECS (deferred payment)
o   Ending in ‘2’ – university full fee paying
o   Ending in ‘3’ – international student only
o   Ending in ‘4’ – VET course – fee determined by provider
o   Can list up to 8 courses to study
§  Most interested = selection 1
§  Least interested = selection 8
o   Can always change these preferences (check VTAC website for the key dates)

-          SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme)
o   Educational, financial disadvantage whilst studying throughout year 11 and 12
o   Personal info and location – category 1
§  Indigenous  background or located in an unrepresented area
o   Difficult circumstances in general
o   Financial disadvantage
o   Suffer from medical condition
o   MUST provide supporting evidence for these (e.g. psychologist or medical certificate)
o   Only 1  SEAS applications for all institutions
o   Opens on Aug 1 – closes on Oct 4 at 5pm (no late entries accepted)

-          Scholarships
o   Most major institutions offer these
o   Based on results, some are equity scholarships (based on other factors)
§  E.g. laptop/books, $500 to help with course
o   Can apply for some through VTAC
§  Tick box that automatically enrols you in any available scholarships (DO THIS)

-          7am December 12!!!!!! (RESULTS)
o   Via SMS and online
o   Can now make more informed decision about courses you’ve applied for
o   Change in preference week (opens again after first preferences have been given)
§  Add new courses
§  Rearrange order
§  Take away some courses
§  Still need to make sure you meet the entry requirements for those courses
o   All institutes have a hotline you can call and ask about courses and events to go to or enquire about some other courses.

-          VTAC Offers
o   First round offers – 18 January 2017
§  Can accept, reject or defer (accepting to study at a later date – not offered with all institutions) offer
§  Definitely advise to accept first round offer
·         If receive offer higher than your first round offer in second round you can reject first round and accept second round
·         Must confirm offer and enrol with institution otherwise place is not provided for you
·         Minimal offers in second and third round
o   Other options – waiting on second or third round offer
§  Change order of preferences so more likely to receive one
§  Direct  applications to institutions
§  Look into mid-year entry if no offer received

-          Student Services
o   Medical and Health services (free to students – you need to seek these out)
o   GP’s and nurses on campus
o   Financial services – budgeting and course help
o   Student union – represent students
§  Sporting and recreational clubs
o   Study Support
§  Workshops or tuition on campus to assist with studies
o   Housing services
§  Support for moving out of home

-          Key Dates
o   July – August = university open days (check their website for details)
o   See above for all dates!

-          If applying for interstate universities, you need to select preferences through that states’ website (e.g. QTAC – Queensland or UAC – New South Wales, etc.)

-          If applying for international colleges/universities – need to check their websites or speak to careers counsellors for requirements!
